Hello to all students who visit, and form friendships, on this wonderful web page!
As a parent of a son who has a disability I am very happy to be invited to participate on this Board in the "Family" section.
I would love to post a question to you all:
"What kind of advice have you gotten from your parents about preparing to leave high school?"

Hi Diane! and welcome! It seems like yesterday I graduated high school...instead of a year ago. I remember my parents wanted me to fufill my goals, one of which was college. When it came to college my parents said choose the one that was right for me, that would support me and care about me as a person as a whole, not just a name in their system. I was also told that college would be a scary experience and that I had to give it at LEAST a year, and I am so glad I did!

Hi Cat,
I am so glad that you gave college a try, and liked it enough to go back again!
So tell me, how did you handle being scared in the beginning?

You just have to put yourself out there, you have a support network at home and then you go to this new place, college, and that support network is no longer there. So as a Freshman you should try to remember that everybody is in pretty much the same boat.
Most people are very welcoming and want to make friends. So just be nice to everyone and introduce yourself, the first week of freshman year is not a week to be shy. You have to find friends in college and create your own support network that is the best advice that I can offer.

Hey Cat,
What great advice! "The first week of freshman year is not a time to be SHY."
I know it is very difficult to leave your support network at home but you're right - you develop a new network in time!
It's wonderful that other students can come to this page and get support right here, too!
